Kernels Collegiate League
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Prospect League to suspend play, the Corn Crib staff launched the Kernels Collegiate League (KCL) to provide local college baseball athletes with a safe and competitive environment close to home. The inaugural season featured four teams: the CornBelters, Gems, Hoots, and Bobcats, offering an exciting opportunity for athletes and fans alike.
Since its successful debut, the KCL has become a summer tradition, growing in popularity each year. In 2021, the league expanded with the addition of the Howlers, BlueCaps, and Ground Sloths. By the 2022 season, the Merchants joined the league, replacing the Howlers, and continuing the Bloomington area's storied summer baseball legacy.
Today, the KCL is home to four dynamic teams: the Bobcats, Merchants, Ground Sloths, and Bluecaps. These teams represent the heart of summer collegiate baseball, fostering talent and community pride while honoring the rich history of the sport in Bloomington-Normal and beyond.
