Summer collegiate baseball commonly brings in new additions each season, but utility player Tyler Thompson has become one of the few familiar faces in the Prospect League. Now in his third and final season with the CornBelters, Thompson accomplished a significant milestone, recording his 150th hit of his CornBelters career Sunday night against Springfield. 

No player has embodied consistency for Normal quite like Thompson. The reliable veteran has put on a CornBelters uniform for the past three years, illustrating improvement every season. Jumpstarting his career in 2024, Thompson posted a .296 AVG, 34 hits and 24 RBI’s. The following season, his hit total nearly doubled, totaling 61 hits and 28 RBI’s. Now in his final season with Normal, Thompson is having a career-best summer in all categories. The infielder is hitting .320 AVG, dialing in 55 hits and 31 RBI’s (breaking his career-high in RBI’s).

When looking at Thompson’s career as a whole, his impact becomes even more on display. Taking the field in 135 career games, he has recorded 150 hits, .300 AVG and 83 RBI’s. Thompson has also displayed exceptional discipline in the batter’s box, drawing 79 walks to just 50 strikeouts. A productive team player who drives in runs and puts the ball into play has shown to be vital for Normal’s success over the past three summers. Not only can he swing the bat, Thompson provides a steady presence at second-base, totaling a .958 career fielding percentage and just 9 errors over three seasons. 

The major 150 hits milestone for Thompson evidently shows a career built on efficiency. With a few weeks left remaining in the season, Thompson has a handful of opportunities to continue adding to his place in CornBelters history. 

The CornBelters travel to Clinton Tuesday evening to face the LumberKings in a fiery division-rival matchup. First pitch in Iowa is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
