Ups and downs for Normal as they split their two-game series with the Thrillville Thrillbillies. Despite picking up the win Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon’s loss officially eliminated the ’Belters from winning the first-half division title and punching their ticket to the playoffs.

Game one in the two-game series was cut short due to inclement weather. The Belters had a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning when the game was suspended. Originally, the postponed game was designated to be rescheduled the following day for a double header, but the Prospect League commissioner overruled the suspension of the game. Consequently, since Normal originally had the lead, the win was automatically given to the Belters. Thrillbillies staff and players showed frustration and ultimately came out looking for revenge the following afternoon. Manager Billy Dubois stated they had bad karma from getting the win from the first outing. 

The first-half of the season carries significant importance for all twenty teams in the Prospect League as each division champion earns an automatic playoff berth and home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs starting August 2. Dubois emphasized the magnitude of the first-half, stating winning the first-half was the team’s highlighted goal. The CornBelters fell short of this objective due to Thrillville’s 15-7 victory and dominant offensive outing at the Corn Crib. 

Although the first-half of the 2026 season is officially over, the standings now completely reset for the second-half of the season. The clean slate gives Normal another opportunity to reach the postseason, as the Belters stand at 15-11 overall and third in the very tight Northwest division.

The CornBelters have shown the capability throughout the season to stack up wins. Due to the impressive hitting and bullpen, the season is far from over. Normal ranks 7th in the Prospect League in hits, with 231, and 2nd in strikeouts, with 173, combining consistency in the batter’s box and reliable arms. 

The ’Belters travel to Burlington Friday to face division rival Bee’s. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. as the CornBelters begin their second-half push with all hopes still alive. A strong restart for the upcoming weeks could land the Belters a playoff spot for the first time since 2022.
